Photometric vs radar launch monitors

The two ways a launch monitor reads your shot decide how much space it needs indoors. Here's the difference in plain terms - and which suits your room.

Short answer: a side-placed camera (sits beside the ball, no ceiling mount, ~zero depth behind the ball) is the easier fit for tight or low-ceiling rooms; behind-the-ball radar needs 6–10 ft of room behind the ball - the most room depth - and shines in larger rooms and outdoors.

How each one works

Behind-the-ball radar (Doppler): sits behind the ball and tracks it through the air, measuring flight to derive speed, launch and spin. Because it watches the ball travel, it needs 6–10 ft of clear space behind the ball - more room depth than any other setup.

Side-placed camera (photometric): sits beside the ball and takes high-speed images of the ball and clubface at impact, calculating the numbers from that moment. It needs no ceiling mount and almost no depth behind the ball, which makes it the natural fit for shallow or low-ceiling indoor rooms.

Accuracy isn't strictly "camera vs radar" - top units of both types are excellent. Space (especially the depth a behind-the-ball radar demands) and budget usually decide it for a home build.
