Best golf launch monitors for a home simulator
The launch monitor is the heart of any home simulator - it reads your shot and drives the software. Here's how to choose, by budget and by the room you actually have.

First, two technologies
Launch monitors read your shot in one of two ways. Radar (Doppler) tracks the ball in flight and works best with some distance to "see" the ball travel. Photometric (camera) photographs the ball and club at impact and sits beside the ball - which makes it the easier fit for tight indoor rooms. Full explainer: photometric vs radar.

Deep dives by use case
This page is the overview. If you already know your scenario, the dedicated picks go deeper:
- Best home launch monitor - chosen by the room you actually have (ceiling, depth, budget).
- Best portable launch monitor - range and backyard picks, and what portability costs indoors.
- Best budget launch monitor - what $230–700 really buys, with the honest total-cost math.
Match it to your room, not just your wallet
The biggest practical filter is your space. Launch monitors split into three placement classes, and they fit very different rooms: side-placed cameras sit beside the ball and need almost no depth behind it; behind-the-ball radar needs 6–10 ft of clear depth behind the ball; and overhead/ceiling-mounted units need a 9.5–10 ft ceiling. Match the class to the constraint you actually have.
- Low ceiling (8–9 ft): a side-placed camera - SkyTrak ST MAX, Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight GC3 - removes any ceiling mount. See low-ceiling picks.
- Very shallow depth: favour a side-placed camera (SkyTrak ST MAX, Bushnell Launch Pro) over behind-the-ball radar (Garmin R10, Mevo+), which wants room behind the ball.
- Comfortable, tall room: anything, including overhead units like the Uneekor EYE XO or Trackman iO.
Our picks
Best all-rounder - SkyTrak ST MAX. A side-placed camera that sits beside the ball with near-zero depth behind it, solid accuracy and a sensible price make it the default home choice. One caveat: official E6 Connect support has been dropped for new buyers, and GSPro runs only via a community connector (it was never officially supported) - so treat the software story as good, not limitless. Best value - Garmin Approach R10. Remarkable data for the money; the easiest way into a home sim. Full R10 review.

FAQ
- What is the best golf launch monitor for a home simulator?
- SkyTrak ST MAX for most rooms - a side-placed camera that's accurate and needs almost no depth behind the ball, so it's low-ceiling friendly; Garmin R10 on a budget (radar, so it needs depth behind the ball); Bushnell Launch Pro or Foresight for pro-grade accuracy.
- Do launch monitors work in a low-ceiling room?
- Side-placed camera units do, and need almost no depth (SkyTrak ST MAX, Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight GC3). Behind-the-ball radar (Garmin R10, Mevo+) needs no ceiling mount but wants 6–10 ft behind the ball. Avoid ceiling-mounted units (Uneekor EYE XO, Trackman iO) in low rooms.
- How much does a good launch monitor cost?
- ~$499–600 (R10), ~$1,299 (FlightScope Mevo Gen2), ~$2,499 (Bushnell Launch Pro), ~$2,995 (SkyTrak ST MAX). Some add software subscriptions.
