Garmin Approach R10 review
The R10 is the unit that put a real launch monitor in reach of almost anyone. For the money it's hard to beat — with a couple of caveats about space and software.

What it is
The Approach R10 is a portable radar (Doppler) launch monitor that sits a few feet behind the ball. It captures the core numbers — ball speed, launch, spin estimate, club path/face proxies — and connects to the Garmin Golf app, with the option to drive third-party simulator software.
Strengths
- Price: nothing else gives this much data near $600.
- Portable: battery-powered, pocket-sized — use it indoors or at the range.
- Low-ceiling friendly: sits behind the ball, no ceiling mount, so room height isn't the constraint.
- Software options: Garmin Golf for practice, or pair with GSPro/E6 for full simulator courses.
Watch-outs
- Radar wants depth: it reads ball flight, so very shallow rooms can give less consistent carry/spin than a photometric unit beside the ball.
- Spin is estimated (unless you use marked balls/metallic stickers for better reads).
- Premium accuracy still belongs to $3k+ photometric units — the R10 is excellent value, not tour-lab precise.
Space it needs
Plan for the unit roughly 6–8 ft behind the ball, plus the ball-to-screen gap. Ceiling height is not a limit (no mount), which is why the R10 is a staple of low-ceiling and garage builds. Check your exact room with the room-fit calculator.
Who it's for
Anyone starting a home sim on a budget, or who wants a portable unit for both indoor and range use. If you want the highest indoor accuracy in a shallow room, step up to a photometric unit such as the SkyTrak+.
FAQ

- How much space does the R10 need?
- ~6–8 ft behind the ball plus the ball-to-screen gap. As radar it likes some depth; ceiling height isn't a constraint.
- Does the R10 need a subscription?
- Basic Garmin Golf use is free; some features use a paid tier, and full sim courses via GSPro/E6 have their own cost.
